For the last three or four years I've been teaching Amanda's and then Kyle's 1st/2nd-grade Sunday School class. It's not always the most relaxing way to spend a Sunday morning, but it's been very rewarding: good for Kyle and Amanda, and good for me. It's fun to tell these old stories to little kids who've never heard them before, and it's especially fun to teach them some of these sweet old songs. Today I taught them to sing "Tell Me Why," an old lullabye that's been on my mind for the last week or so, probably because I heard Amanda playing it on her trumpet. One of the most touching things I've ever heard was a broadcast of Prairie Home Companion years ago after which Garrison Keillor led the audience in singing it:
Tell me why the stars do shine
Tell me why the ivy twines
Tell me why the sky's so blue
And then I'll tell you just why I love you
Learning this song wasn't part of the lesson plan, but at the end of circle time it just seemed like the right moment. And it was.
