If you ever have the chance to work with a group of people who play a team sport together on some regular basis, don't find an excuse not to play. Even if you think you're too old and fat and uncoordinated, even if you think it doesn't fit your image, even if you don't particularly like the people you work with, do it anyway. Find your baseball glove, get out your running shoes, do whatever is necessary to participate. Playing a team sport, or just going out and getting some exercise with your colleagues, is one of life's simple pleasures, and the great majority of people lose all opportunities to do it after their school years. You won't get many chances, and you'll be poorer if you pass any of them up.
I was thinking about it as I rode home from our company soccer game this evening. We do this kind of thing once a week, although in years past we've only played during warm weather; this year we've found a place to play indoors, so we're playing in the winter, too. I'm certainly the worst player on the field, I'm probably in the worst shape, and I experience a little bit of dread before each game just because I know how awfully tiring it will be. But the exercise is good for me, and it's very good for our company to have this as a group activity. It's one of a few things that we unquestionably do well.
